Hey L.A. Foodies.... Can Someone Please Explain...

The discrepencies below...

Los Angeles County Census - 2004

Asian - 11.9 %

Los Angeles Food Blogging Community

Asian - 95%

I don't get it?

There is absolutely no logical explanation for this discrepency.

A "skew" or a "slight variance" is one thing, but this is like totally freakin' obscene....

Although, I'm not a foodie, you might call me an "Observationist". Observing and commenting on random acts of human behavior and social occurences. Stereotyping, Ranting, Profiling, and Analyzing with no formal education or experience leads me to believe in the following theories for this naturally occuring phenomenon.

1) I missed the exclusionary posting on all your food blogging websites that said non-Asians need not apply?

2) The ratio of Asians with broadband capabilities are dispropotionate with the general population.

3) Asians just love to eat and talk about it.

4) Asians have a "Food Gene", if this is the case I discovered it, so it should be named DCCF Gene. I think this is possible, kinda like how only Asians "squat" ? I'm convinced that's genetic as well.... I've never seen a Caucasian, Latino, or African American squat unless they played for the Dodgers.

5)The Blogspot Non-Asian Filter kicks in anytime the words "tasty" or "yummy" are used.

5) You are all Bloodtype O's..... and this is your creative forum..... hmmm...

Anyways, you guys are all too nice, but its freakin' weird....

Hey DCCF - We like to eat man! Around the office (orafice) back home, the most important question of the day used to be "what's for lunch?" We also like variety, not the usual sandwich or burger....someone could build a huge study, or a really funny comedy around this.

There's a reason why Japanese - Chinese - Thai - Korean - Vietnamese cuisines are everyone's favorites. Asians know food.

hey kirk,

i'm actually throwing around an idea to do a "foodie" screenplay... I'm just waiting for Pam to help write it.. ha ha..

hey neil,

yeah, know what you mean, i really don't recall any of my friends ever saying "hey, man lets go get some British food"... or American food for that matter.. lol

A foodie screenplay?! Sounds like it would be hilarious! Hopefully you have a lot of Asian actors and actresses who you can fill in the "foodie" roles, just to make it realistic.

When I was surfing through food blogs a while back, I found one food blogger who helped write a CSI: NY script involving food. You might want to check his site out--and I think he's a friend of Pam's!

OOOOH, my very first screenplay!!! LOL!

Asians like to eat. It's in our blood. You don't find us at the golf course or at the beach on the weekend. You'll find us lining up for dim sum.

DCCF, I've thought about this a lot. On my blogroll, I think all but two people are of Asian descent.

In general, I think Asians just love being on the computer (aim, myspace). I know I do. And when you mix two interests (computers & food) = you get foodblogs.

As for varieties in restaurants, i tend to think that most American restaurants are run by corporations. When i think American food, I think Claimjumper's, Houston's, Olive Garden, Buca Di Beppo. I'm not thinking of the Counter in S.Monica, Doughboy's in LA, etc. It's not tough to find a Houston's within a few square miles. On the other hand, you look at places like Valley Blvd. In the SGV, there's pretty much only one of each restaurant and each one has something different to offer. I think people nowadays are more inclined to try different foods since fusion-cuisine is hot right now.

Food styles also transcend through the Asian culture. Pad See Eew thai noodles are almost the same as Beef Chow fun. So it's very likely that someone will try another culture's noodles for example. Ramen is the same as Chinese La-Mian (Lai-mein). Korean Ja Jyang Myeon is the same as the Chinese Ja Jiang Mian. I myself love noodles, and i will eat chinese, thai, korean, japanese, indonesian, cambodian and filipino noodles.

Another thing, eating together weekly with friends and family is a ritual. Now you know why dim sum takes so freaking long on weekends - they bring the great great great grandparents there too.

Finally, we love to eat.

i knew i couldn't be the only one thinking about it.. you have some good points with the corporate v.s. asian food thing, hadn't even thought about that.

found another clue... a good portion of y'all from ucla... ucla peeps are typically good natured, easy going and non-confrontational... not like us jerks from the other side...

that exlains a lot... hmmm

DCCF, another possible hint is that Asian food is generally VERY AFFORDABLE. Whether you're in Torrance, SGV, Hacienda/Rowlanda Heights or Westminster/Garden Grove, food prices remain the same. Sometimes things are so inexpensive, it's almost worth it to just eat out versus cooking at home.

ednbm, right again... asian food is pretty reasonable and sometimes much cheaper than preparing it at home. if you throw in the opportunity costs of a typical high paying white collar job, then it really doesn't make sense to prepare food at home... besides you can't prepare 6-7 dishes every night like you can get at a decent chinese seafood restaurant for the price.

sooo... i'm happy, i think i figured out why the L.A. food bloggers are such a easygoing considerate bunch... most of you guys are from UCLA.... it actually makes sense to me now...

I read somewhere that Bird Flu is expected to arrive in the USA or Canada this fall.
It said it killed almost 60% of those who got infected.
Is it true ?
What can we do to avoid it ?
